What started as a small gathering of enthusiasts with no expectation of how large it might become has grown into one of the most popular and longest continually running cycling events in the Southeast.
Humble Beginnings
The inaugural ride launched in 2001 with just 166 cyclists and a modest goal of giving back.
As the ride’s reputation for scenic vistas and top-tier support grew, so did the attendance:
- 2006 – 2010: The “BBC” hit a major milestone, routinely hosting over 1,000 riders. This era was defined by our partnership with the “Bud Plant,” which opened its parking lot in the mid-90’s to weekend riders year-round, making our routes a staple for local athletes.
- 2020: When the world stayed in, we found a way to safely get outdoors. To ensure rider safety and proper distancing, we moved our start and finish line to Cass High School, keeping the tradition alive during a challenging year.
- In 2025, we celebrated our 25th Anniversary edition. It was a banner year for the BBC, with nearly 1,000 cyclists coming together to help deliver one of our stronger fundraising efforts in support of Hickory Log.
The Tradition Continues every year on the third Saturday in September. This year, join us on September 19, 2026.
Today, the Beautiful Backroads Century remains dedicated to its roots: showcasing the stunning backroads of North Georgia while supporting the residents of Hickory Log.
